What the lookup tells you
Every UK postcode is mapped by the Office for National Statistics to the areas used for public services. This tool reads those links from postcodes.io, a free service built on ONS and Ordnance Survey open data, and shows them in one place. Nothing you type is stored by us.
- Local authority is the council that sets and collects your council tax (or, in Northern Ireland, the district council; rates are billed by Land and Property Services).
- Ward is the area your local councillors represent.
- Constituency is your Westminster parliamentary seat, on the boundaries used since the 2024 general election.
- LSOA (lower layer super output area) is the small statistical area of around 1,500 people that the ONS uses for things like deprivation and census figures.
Checking a house before a viewing
Once you have the postcode, the links under the result go straight to the official records. The energy certificate search covers England and Wales, with a separate register for Scotland. Flood risk comes from the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales or SEPA in Scotland. Sold prices come from HM Land Registry for England and Wales.
The postcode centre is not your house. Flood risk in particular can change from one side of a street to the other, so check the address on the official map, not just the postcode.
Worked example
LS1 4AP
Entering LS1 4AP shows England, the Yorkshire and The Humber region, Leeds as the local authority, and the Leeds Central and Headingley constituency. The links then open the EPC search and Land Registry sold prices for that postcode, and the council tax band checker set to England’s 1991 bands.
Questions people ask
Which council is my postcode in?
Enter the postcode above. The result shows the local authority that collects council tax and runs bins, planning and schools for that postcode. A few postcodes straddle a boundary, so check a council letter or your bill if the answer looks wrong.
Does a postcode tell me the exact address?
No. A full postcode covers about 15 addresses on average, and sometimes a lot more. The location shown is the centre of the postcode, not a particular house.
Why does my postcode say it is not found?
New-build postcodes can take a few months to appear in the open data, and postcodes that Royal Mail has retired drop out. Check for typing errors first: O and 0, and I and 1, are easy to swap.
Can I use this to find who owns a house?
No. Ownership is on the title register, which you can buy from HM Land Registry for £7 in England and Wales, Registers of Scotland or Land and Property Services in Northern Ireland. We do not show owner names.
